Eric Foner Discusses Hiram Revels

On January 20, 1870, the Mississippi state legislature voted 85 to 15 to send Hiram Revels to the United States Senate. On February 25, 1870, Revels became the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate. Last February, historian Eric Foner spoke at the Old Capitol to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the election.
