Only a few properties in Natchez offer the expansive views of the Mississippi River available at the Neil Varnell House. This property is the ideal Natchez residence, offering history, architectural detailing, convenience, and inspiring views of the river. Contact HNF with any inquires about the Neil Varnell House.
This Queen Anne cottage was constructed circa 1894. Deed records reflect the lot being transferred from Issac Lowenburg to C.L. Tillman on May 18, 1888. However, the property, with improvements of a house, was not sold again until September 1907. In September 1978, 205 Clifton Avenue was sold to its longest owner and caretaker, J. Neil Varnell. Neil dedicated his time and resources to restoring the house to its current period appropriate appearance. A longtime friend of the Historic Natchez Foundation and preservation, Dr. Varnell left his residence to HNF following his death in March 2019.
The house retains many of its original details, such as woodwork on its multiple porches, including one on the second floor. The interior is comprised of three bedrooms accompanied by three full bathrooms and a half bath. A dining room, parlor, den, kitchen, and second story living space complete the floor plan. Original interior millwork and stairway details remain as well. Three separate porches offer distinct views of the river unlike any other location in Natchez. The Neil Varnell House is move-in-ready and will be a treasure for any future owner.
To the right is a 1930s view of house then owned by the John T. Rowe Family.
